Herbal Remedies for Acid Reflux Symptoms

Several acid reflux remedies (GERD) are prepared from one or more medicinal herbs. Outlined below are a number of herbs and herbal formulations that can be used as home remedies for heartburn and other acid reflux symptoms.

Fennel Seed

Chew half a teaspoon of fennel seeds slowly, after each meal. Fennel seed contains an active constituent called anethole that helps to reduce the muscle spasms in the stomach and alleviate acid reflux symptoms.

Chamomile Herbal Tea

Brew chamomile tea and drink a cup three times a day between meals. This herb has, for centuries, been one of the most popular home remedies for heartburn, acid reflux and GERD and other gastro-intestinal conditions across Europe and North America. To brew a cup of chamomile herbal tea, steep two teaspoons of dried chamomile in eight ounces of steaming water for 15 minutes, then strain out the solids. Drink a cup between meals.

Deglycyrrhizinated Licorice (DGL)

Soothe the tissues lining the esophagus and stomach with deglycyrrhizinated licorice (DGL). This is an herbal formulation that is produced from licorice root, from which a compound called glycyrrhizin has been removed.

Author Dr. Metcalfe recommends this herbal formulation as one of the most effective curative and preventative acid reflux remedies. For one, licorice has an antispasmodic action that reduces heartburn by alleviating stomach cramps. Furthermore, it also stimulates the body’s own natural defences to protect this cell tissue in the digestive tract from potential damage that may be caused by excess stomach acid.

Ginger Root Decoction

Drink freshly brewed ginger herbal tea decoction, one of the most popular folk acid reflux remedies. Slice about half an inch of fresh ginger (about half the size of a thumb) and grate it. Place the freshly-grated ginger into a cup of water and microwave for two to three minutes. Strain out the ginger, add some honey to sweeten, and drink this while still warm. Alternatively, chew some candied ginger.

Anise and Lavender

Brew an herbal infusion from dried anise and lavender to alleviate acid reflux symptoms and drink a cup each morning and evening. Make this tea by steeping half a teaspoon of lavender and half a teaspoon of anise in eight ounces of boiling water. Let the herbs steep for 10 to 15 minutes before straining the herbal infusion. If desired, add a little honey to sweeten it.

Orange Peel Extract (d-limonene)

Treat acid reflux symptoms using orange peel extract (d-limonene), an herbal formulation that helps boost the speed of the digestive process. It minimizes the need for the stomach to continually produce the acids needed to digest food, in turn minimizing the possibility of excess acid accumulating in the stomach and getting refluxed up into the esophagus.

Professional Consultation

Herbal remedies may interact with other drugs that are taken at the same time, so it is important to consult with a licensed physician before going on an herbal regimen.
