Heartburn and Irritable Bowel Syndrome
Peppermint, Menthe piperita, is a soothing antispasmodic that relieves acidity, heartburn, diarrhoea, indigestion and flatulence. For an acidity-regulating lotion take two drops each of lemon and peppermint oil and three drops of sandalwood to one-half ounce, 15 ml, two and a half teaspoonfuls of carrier lotion. Apply a little of the lotion below the breastbone and area just beneath, firmly using the palm of your hand, massage clockwise in circular motions.
Irritable Bowel Syndrome, or IBS, is a colicky pain that occurs in the lower abdomen with alternating constipation or diarrhoea, wind and heartburn. Stress intensifies the ongoing muscle spasms and pain. Introduce a gradual high-fibre diet of fruits and vegetable, including three tablespoons of bran daily.
Indigestion and Flatulence
For indigestion and flatulence take four drops of peppermint, two drops of juniper berry and caraway to one-half fluid ounce, 15 ml or two and a half teaspoons of lotion. Apply the mixture to upper or lower abdomen where the discomfort is located.

To make a tea put one to two teaspoonfuls of the dried herb and infuse for ten minutes and drink three times a day or as needed. Gentain, Gentiana lutea, is an herbal bitter for dyspepsia and flatulence. Put one-half teaspoonful of shredded root in a cup of water and boil for five minutes. Drink warm fifteen to thirty minutes before meals, or during acute pains.
Diarrhea and Constipation
To prevent dehydration during diarrhea use the juice of a fresh orange, half a teaspoonful of salt and one teaspoonful of honey and fill the glass up to the top with water and sip continually until the symptoms improve. Take three drops of tea tree and peppermint, two drops of geranium and sandalwood and one fluid ounce, 30 ml or five teaspoonfuls of carrier lotion or oil and massage lower abdomen and small of your back in clockwise direction, repeat every few hours until the symptoms improve.
For constipation take three drops of sweet marjoram, rosemary and two drops of roman chamomile to one fluid ounce, 30 ml or five teaspoonfuls of carrier oil and use as above. Yellow Dock, Rumex crispus, acts in a gentle way to relieve constipation. Put one to two teaspoonfuls of the root in a cup of water, bring to boil and simmer gentle for ten to fifteen minutes and drink three times a day.
